Boy, you thought baseball parents were bad before… well, they’re about to get worse.
The Philadelphia Phillies have reached a pre-agreement with Venezuelan shortstop David Basabe for a reported $1.8 million bonus. The international signing itself isn’t all that surprising, the age is.
Basabe is only 11 years old.
Yes. Eleven.
That sound you just heard? Every travel-ball parent in America scrambling to update their kid’s recruiting profile and fire up a new highlight reel.
At just 11, Basabe becomes the youngest player in history to secure a pre-agreement with a Major League organization.
The deal sets a new benchmark in the international market and officially puts David Basabe on the radar as one of the most ambitious bets of his generation. And here I thought winning at Williamsport was the dream over every 11-year-old.
