Zack Wheeler took a major step forward in his recovery this week.
Wheeler threw off a mound Thursday for the first time since undergoing thoracic outlet surgery last September, marking a significant milestone in his rehab process. The session consisted of 21 pitches, primarily fastballs and sinkers, as he continues building arm strength.
Phillies manager Rob Thomson said the right-hander looked sharp during the session and came away feeling good afterward. Still, the Philadelphia Phillies are taking a cautious approach and will monitor how Wheeler responds before increasing his workload.
Wheeler has already been ruled out for Opening Day, and there is no firm timetable for his return. A late April or early May return remains possible, but the club is prioritizing long-term health over rushing the ace back to the rotation.
For now, Thursday’s bullpen session stands as the clearest sign yet that Wheeler is trending in the right direction.
