The Eagles are working on creating cap space and working on retention.
One of their additions at the trade deadline was Michael Carter – the Jets corner who showed a ton of promise and got a big deal but ultimately was traded after losing playing time in New York.
He didn’t play much in Philly, either, but he’ll be back.
This is likely all part of his desire to play in Philadelphia, where reports indicated he removed a $5 million injury guarantee from his contract to allow the deal to be completed.
The deal really only cost the Eagles dropping back one round in the draft.
With a cap hit of just north of $10 million and under $2 million guaranteed, the team could create $8 million in space just by cutting the veteran, but a renegotiated deal has been agreed to.
Initial reports indicate the cap hit will be around $3 million instead – a move that saves almost $7 million in cap space for the Eagles and likely gets Carter $1-2 million more over the course of the next two years.
For the Eagles, they retain another corner who could compete for a starting role but is, at worst, solid depth for the position.
