Here we go again!
Appearing on a recent Philadelphia Inquirer Phillies podcast, Scott Boras once again raised the idea of Bryce Harper extending his stay in Philadelphia, pointing to the Harper’s desire to build a long-term legacy beyond his current deal, which runs through the 2031 season.
This isn’t the first time Harper and Boras have floated the idea of a contract extension before the end of his deal, but this time it carries more gravitas.
The Phillies opened Pandora’s Box when they recently tore up Cristopher Sánchez’s existing contract to hand him a new extension.
It establishes a precedent — maybe a bad one?— not just financially but also philosophically.
The Phillies have shown a willingness to be proactive, and Boras is now clearly leveraging that when discussing Harper’s future publicly.
The timing is certainly interesting. Harper is off to a slow start slashing just .214/.313/.429 with three doubles, a pair of homers, and seven RBIs. Although he’s shown signs of breaking out, the slow starts comes after the infamous “not elite” fiasco from the offseason.
Will it work? Who knows but this time around it feels less like posturing and more like groundwork.
