The Don Mattingly era begins on an interim basis for the Philadelphia Phillies, and the veteran skipper brings a lengthy managerial résumé to a club in need of stability. Mattingly owns a career record of 889-950 across 1,839 games, good for a .483 winning percentage over 12 seasons managing the Dodgers and Marlins.

He experienced his greatest success in Los Angeles, guiding the Dodgers to three straight NL West titles from 2013–2015, while his time in Miami was more uneven, highlighted by a 2020 NL Manager of the Year campaign.

Now stepping in after Rob Thomson’s dismissal amid a 9-19 start, Mattingly’s immediate job is clear: steady a struggling roster and simplify things.

Expect a fundamentals-first approach that leans on on experience, clubhouse communication, and lineup consistency. Mattingly isn’t viewed as a long-term solution, but he provides credibility and a calming presence. If the Phillies respond, he could position himself as a legitimate candidate beyond the interim tag later this season.
