Lane Johnson Retires From NFL

The Eagles have lost the last of their long-time linemen.

On Tuesday afternoon, Lane Johnson released a statement that he would be officially retiring from the NFL.

He was a last-minute inactive for the team last weekend.

Johnson notes he will be dealing with his mental state and he’s been open in the past about dealing with anxiety.

He leaves the game after 14 years in the NFL, all with Philadelphia.

He started for two Super Bowl Champion winning teams, was selected to six Pro Bowls, appeared in the NFL Top 100 four times, and generally changed the game in terms of the right tackle position no longer being thought of as a lesser position to left tackles.

He was a top player defending the edge for years. He was not living up to that standard this year, be that due to the new offensive scheme, injuries, personal challenges, etc., that likely helped him to make the decision to retire. Unverified reports at the current time point to a personal matter having to do with his family.

It marks an official end of an era as now now all of the previous “Core Four” have retired from the NFL with Brandon Graham not returning this year and Lane Johnson stepping out.

The team hopes they have a new core on the way for the lines in players like Jalen Carter, Jordan Davis, Jalyx Hunt, and/or Nolan Smith, but the offensive line is murkier with Jordan Mailata being the lone saving grace on the offensive line amid Cam Jurgens being one of the worst OL in the game going on the second season in a row and Landon Dickerson being constantly injured for about two full seasons now.

Markel Bell took over on short notice this past weekend and played a solid game as a rookie with little prep as a starter. The team will hope he continues to grow as they need a right tackle for the future and have not spent high picks at the position for several years.

The Eagles will now see Johnson’s signing bonuses that had been pushed into future years amass on this year’s cap once the retirement is made official with the league offices and that transaction officially posts. It may be some time between now and when that happens as the Eagles navigate the cap situation around that they likely were not expecting.
