The Philadelphia Eagles received some reassuring news this week regarding the future of defensive coordinator Vic Fangio.
Speaking with reporters Thursday, Fangio dismissed speculation about retirement and made it clear he still plans to patrol the Eagles’ sideline for the foreseeable future.
“I’m good for two years, at least,” Fangio said when asked about potentially stepping away from coaching.
Fangio admitted he briefly considered his future following the 2025 season, but ultimately said remaining with Philadelphia was an easy decision because of the organization, coaching staff, and roster already in place.
The veteran coordinator also emphasized that the defense itself still has room to improve despite carrying the team for stretches last season. Fangio’s unit remained one of the NFL’s top pass defenses in 2025, allowing the league’s fewest passing touchdowns and lowest completion percentage.
Fangio also provided insight into the Eagles’ evolving secondary. He revealed that Cooper DeJean will line up at safety in the team’s base defense packages.
“It’s open,” Fangio said regarding the starting safety job next to rookie Andrew Mukuba. “In base, it will be Cooper [DeJean]. When we go to nickel and Coop comes up and plays nickel, it’ll be Epps.”
Fangio added that Marcus Epps, Michael Carter, and others will all compete for roles in the secondary heading into training camp.
For an Eagles team entering another season with high expectations, keeping Fangio around may be one of the organization’s most important offseason victories.
