Speculation surrounding Bryce Harper and the Philadelphia Phillies lineup continues to gain traction as the club continues its search for offensive consistency during a frustrating start to the season.
While Harper has not publicly stated he refuses to bat second, rumor and innuendo around the organization suggests the former MVP may prefer remaining in the middle of the lineup rather than shifting into a more analytics-driven role near the top of the order.
With interim manager Don Mattingly looking for ways to spark the offense, many around baseball believe moving Harper behind Trea Turner could maximize plate appearances and create more pressure on opposing pitchers early in games. Others believe Harper’s elite power profile makes him a natural fit in a traditional RBI role batting third or fourth.
As the Phillies search for consistency and chase the Atlanta Braves in the NL East, every lineup decision — especially involving Harper — is likely to face increasing scrutiny.
