One season after leaving the Philadelphia Eagles for a massive four-year, $76.4 million deal with the Arizona Cardinals, Josh Sweat is suddenly back in the rumor mill.
Sweat has reportedly skipped voluntary OTA workouts, and teams around the league are already checking on his availability.
And naturally, Eagles fans immediately responded the only way Eagles fans know how:
“Bring him back.”
Of course. Why stop there? The Birds should probably reunite with every former player that becomes slightly discontented. Maybe trade for everybody. Build the entire roster out of familiar faces and nostalgia while we’re at it.
In reality, trading Sweat right now would make absolutely zero sense for Arizona.
The Cardinals did nothing to improve their edge rush this offseason. Trading away their only proven pass rusher before Week 1 would be an organizational disaster for a team already facing questions about competing in the NFC West.
Could that change by the trade deadline? Sure.
If Arizona struggles — which is likely — Sweat could become a very attractive midseason trade chip. Contenders always overpay for pass rushers in November, and Sweat still has enough production left to command interest despite turning 30 next year.
So should the Eagles trade for him?
Honestly, yes… but only if the price is dirt cheap.
The Eagles already have significant money invested along the defensive line and have spent premium draft picks on younger pass rushers. Bringing Sweat back simply because fans recognize the name would be ridiculous.
Then again, if Arizona completely falls apart and Howie Roseman can steal him for pennies on the dollar? That’s the kind of move Howie Roseman has built his reputation on.
