The Philadelphia Eagles have never been shy about rewarding their young stars early. That’s what makes the latest report surrounding defensive tackle Jalen Carter so interesting.
According to NFL insider Albert Breer, the Eagles are reportedly hesitant to commit to a massive long-term extension for Carter despite the former first-round pick already establishing himself as one of the NFL’s premier defensive linemen.
On the field, Carter’s resume speaks for itself. The 25-year-old has already earned multiple Pro Bowl selections, All-Pro honors, and played a major role in Philadelphia’s Super Bowl-winning defense. The Eagles exercised his fifth-year option, keeping him under contract through the 2027 season.
The hesitation appears to stem from concerns beyond football.
Breer suggested the Eagles may want to see continued maturity and consistency before handing Carter a contract that could make him one of the highest-paid defensive players in the league.
Those concerns aren’t entirely unfounded. Carter has faced questions about conditioning dating back to his pre-draft process and has had several discipline-related incidents during his NFL career. Most notably, he was ejected from the Eagles’ season opener after a spitting incident involving Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott, resulting in league discipline and renewed scrutiny.
The Eagles have already committed significant money to defensive tackle Jordan Davis, signing him to a three-year, $78 million extension earlier this offseason. That deal gives Philadelphia some flexibility to be patient with Carter’s situation.
Ultimately, this doesn’t mean the Eagles don’t view Carter as a cornerstone player. It simply means Howie Roseman and the front office appear willing to wait for additional proof that Carter can consistently match his elite talent with the professionalism required of a franchise-defining player
If Carter delivers another dominant season in 2026, expect extension talks to heat up quickly.
