Nothing is yet official, but the work on the street is Ertz will be back in midnight green.

There were rumblings throughout the offseason, but now Adam Schefter is reporting it: Zack Ertz is expected to re-join the Eagles.

Ertz was, of course, drafted by the Eagles in the second round of the 2013 draft and spent eight and a half years in Philly before he was traded away to the Cardinals.

Over the past two seasons, he recorded 1158 yards, 76 first downs, and 11 touchdowns for the Commanders (he played only 13 games last year). He’ll join a more well-rounded offensive staff that fans hope will begin to regain it’s footing following a coordinator and playbook change over the offseason.

The move comes after reports that Dallas Goedert has a sprained MCL. Depending on the severity, that likely means he’ll miss anywhere from 1-4 weeks.

No official move has been made to say what the corresponding move is, but if the sprain is severe enough, the team may just put Goedert on IR.

With Goedert expected to miss time, Ertz would seem to be the team’s top tight end.

The other rostered tight ends: E.J. Jenkins, a pass catcher who is rarely used, and Johnny Mundt, a blocking specialist. The team lost Cam Latu to waivers during final cuts, and put Eli Stowers on IR before their first game, though he and Calcaterra would likely have been a hinderance rather than a help at this point.

Ertz sits at 579 career catches with the Eagles, just 10 behind all-time franchise leader Harold Carmichael. With his return, he’ll get a shot to become the franchise leader himself.
