Bad news for the Birds, which seems like the only news they get.
After losing Will Shipley, Jalyx Hunt, Drew Kendall, and Michael Carter, the team now will be without their QB for the foreseeable future.
On Thursday, news of Hurts’ calf injury now having a blood clot arrived.
The severity is not yet known, but Ian Rapoport reports Hurts as “out indefinitely”.
There are variations of clotting issues, from those that have kept players out a few weeks, Panthers tackles Taylor Moton is returning after nearly four months for a lung clotting issue, all the way to players needing to retire for medical/safety reasons.
With the severity unknown, the length of an expected absence is up in the air. Tanner McKee will take the reigns of a putrid offense and will have a chance to try and turn things around.
While not directly tanking, however, he’ll have a tough task improving the team with 21 players listed on the injury report (before this Hurts news) – at that point, there’s probably not much anyone can do.
Despite that, the Eagles have hung around in the last two games and could very easily be 4-1 right now had they gotten one more play in their favor. That’ll be up to McKee for at least this week against the Panthers.
Depending on how the next few weeks go, McKee could play himself into an extension, turn himself into one of the most valuable trade chips available at the deadline, or potentially make himself not a trade chip at all.
Rookie fifth-round pick Cole Payton would be in line as the first QB off the bench. As of the moment, the Eagles do not have another quarterback on the practice squad.
