The New York Mets somehow found a new way to embarrass themselves on Tuesday night, blowing an early five-run lead and allowing an inside-the-park grand slam to James Wood in a 9-5 loss to the Washington Nationals.
Down 5-0, the Nationals loaded the bases with two outs in the second inning when Mets starter Nolan McLean fell behind Wood. On the first pitch of the at-bat, McLean fired a sweeper that Wood launched deep to left field. The ball glanced off the arm of leaping outfielder Nick Morabito before ricocheting toward center field, turning into chaos for New York.
Wood flew around the bases in just 15.15 seconds and dove safely across home plate for the first inside-the-park grand slam of his career. The Nationals never looked back, capitalizing on another ugly defensive performance from a Mets team that continues spiraling through a brutal stretch.
