The Philadelphia Phillies have made a major in-season change, firing manager Rob Thomson following a disappointing 9-19 start to the 2026 campaign.

The Philllies entered the season with high expectations after four consecutive postseason appearances from 2022 through 2025, but the club has struggled out of the gate. Inconsistent offense and uneven pitching performances contributed to the slow start, prompting the organization to act early in hopes of salvaging the season.

Thomson, who took over as manager in 2022, leaves behind a successful tenure that helped reestablish the Phillies as a National League contender. He guided the team to a National League pennant in 2022 and oversaw four straight playoff appearances, compiling a 355-270 regular season record during his time in Philadelphia.

Despite that sustained success, the Phillies’ front office determined a change was necessary as the team failed to find its rhythm early in 2026.

In the interim, Don Mattingly will take over managerial duties for the remainder of the season.
