The Philadelphia Flyers could be one of the teams monitoring a potential blockbuster situation developing with the Detroit Red Wings and star center Dylan Larkin.

According to reports, Larkin has requested a trade from Detroit, and if the Red Wings make their captain available, there will be no shortage of suitors across the NHL. One of those interested teams could very well be the Orange and Black.

As noted by Inky scribe Mike Sielski, the Flyers are believed to have interest in acquiring the veteran center. The bigger question becomes: what would it cost?

Dylan Larkin’s Contract Situation

Larkin is currently halfway through an 8-year, $69.6 million contract that carries an $8.75 million annual cap hit through the 2030-31 NHL season.

From a financial standpoint, the Flyers appear capable of making it work. Philadelphia is projected to enter the offseason with roughly $37.5 million in available cap space, giving general manager Danny Brière flexibility to pursue a major addition.

The former 15th overall pick in the 2014 NHL Draft would instantly become one of the biggest names added to the Flyers’ roster during the rebuild era.

What Would the Flyers Have to Give Up?

A trade package for Larkin would not come cheap.

Any serious offer would likely need to include NHL-ready talent along with premium draft capital. A player such as Owen Tippett could potentially be part of discussions, in addition to multiple draft picks and possibly another high-end prospect.

Detroit would almost certainly demand a significant return for a player who has been one of the organization’s cornerstone pieces for over a decade.

Why Dylan Larkin Makes Sense for Philadelphia

Simply put elite centers do not become available often.

Larkin has eclipsed the 30-goal mark six times during his 11-year NHL career, including each of the last five consecutive seasons. The two-time NHL All-Star brings speed, leadership, offensive consistency, and top-line experience. All areas the Flyers are still working to solidify long-term.

More importantly, Larkin would fit perfectly alongside Philadelphia’s emerging young core featuring Matvei Michkov and Porter Martone.

For a rebuilding Flyers team looking to accelerate its timeline without sacrificing competitiveness, adding a proven No. 1 center entering his prime could be exactly the type of move that changes the trajectory of the franchise.
