The Philadelphia Flyers are not expected to rush into an extension with winger Matvei Michkov this offseason.

Speaking with NHL.com’s Adam Kimelman at the 2026 NHL Draft Combine, Flyers GM Danny Briere discussed Michkov’s future and suggested both sides are comfortable waiting before negotiating a new deal.

Michkov becomes extension-eligible in July as he enters the final year of his entry-level contract. After posting 63 points during his rookie campaign, the talented winger saw his production dip to 51 points during his sophomore season. He was also criticized for arriving at training camp out of shape and was scratched twice during the playoffs, recording just one assist in eight postseason games.

“I think after this season … he’s a very competitive guy,” Briere said. “I think he wants to prove to everyone that there’s more there. I know (what) he prefers at this point; it’s the best thing for him to wait and come back and show us what he’s all about.”

Despite the disappointing season, the Flyers still view Michkov as a major part of the franchise’s future. The organization now appears willing to let the 21-year-old re-establish his value before discussing a long-term extension.
