The Philadelphia Phillies have optioned rookie right-hander Andrew Painter to Triple-A, the club announced Wednesday. A corresponding roster move to fill his spot on the 26-man roster will be made Thursday.

According to the The Athletic, the Phillies plan to add an extra reliever for Thursday’s game before taking a different approach to the No. 5 spot in the rotation next week. The report also noted that Philadelphia has already begun engaging other teams about potential No. 5 starter and swingman options.

The move comes as Painter’s struggles continued. The 23-year-old posted a 7.06 ERA across 65 innings and the Phillies went just 1-7 in games he started under interim manager Don Mattingly.

Since Mattingly took over, Philadelphia has gone 31-14, the best record in Major League Baseball during that span. Remarkably, four of the Phillies’ eight losses under Mattingly came with Painter on the mound.
