Phillies Make Multiple Pitching Moves Ahead of Nationals Series

According to multiple reports, the Philadelphia Phillies made several roster moves Sunday following their series victory over the New York Mets. Right-hander Bryse Wilson was designated for assignment, while reliever Max Lazar was optioned back to Triple-A Lehigh Valley.

In corresponding moves, the Phillies are expected to activate Kyle Backhus and add another pitcher ahead of Monday’s series opener in Washington against the Nationals. The club has not yet announced a starting pitcher for Monday’s game.

The uncertainty comes just days after top prospect Andrew Painter was optioned to Triple-A. Painter had been lined up to take the next turn through the rotation, but the Phillies opted to send the rookie back to the minors as they continue evaluating options for the fifth starter role.

With the trade deadline approaching and the bullpen workload increasing, The Phillies appear to be searching for additional pitching solutions as they look to maintain their position in the National League standings.
