In a completely on point move for Rod Brind’Amour, the Carolina Hurricanes head coach apparently had his players training to lift the Stanley Cup all season long… they just didn’t know it.
A story has surfaced after Carolina captured the 2026 Stanley Cup, capping a dominant playoff run that included a sweep of the Philadelphia Flyers. While the Hurricanes were busy dispatching the Flyers in four games, Brind’Amour was quietly watching one of his most unusual motivational tactics pay off.
Throughout the season, Hurricanes players participated in a workout drill known as the “Blue Collar Press.” During the exercise, players would press a concrete cinder block overhead as part of their training routine. The drill was designed to symbolize the hard work, sacrifice, and blue-collar mentality required to succeed in the NHL.
If that sounds familiar, it should.
Before becoming one of the NHL’s most respected coaches, Brind’Amour built his reputation as one of hockey’s ultimate blue-collar players. The former Flyers alternate captain spent nearly a decade in Philadelphia, becoming a fan favorite because of his relentless work ethic, leadership, and commitment to doing the little things right.
That same mindset has become the foundation of Carolina’s culture.
The twist came after the Hurricanes won the Stanley Cup. Players learned that the cinder block weighed roughly the same as the Stanley Cup itself. In other words, Brind’Amour had unknowingly prepared his team for the iconic championship celebration all season long.
According to reports, players had no idea about the connection until after Carolina secured the title. The realization immediately turned the story into one of the most memorable behind-the-scenes moments of the 2026 postseason.
Rod sneakily built in a 35 pound cinderblock lift into the Canes offseason workouts, called it “Blue Collar Presses”, and the boys never thought anything of it…
Turns out he was having them practice lifting the Cup all season long 🤯🔥

For Flyers fans, the story may sting a little considering Carolina swept Philadelphia on its way to the championship. But it’s also hard not to appreciate the creativity behind the idea.
After all, if there’s one coach in the NHL who would find a way to turn a concrete block into a Stanley Cup lesson, it’s Brind’Amour.
