The Philadelphia Flyers quickly learned the Carolina Hurricanes are a completely different challenge than the Pittsburgh Penguins.
Carolina controlled Game 1 of the second-round Stanley Cup Playoff series from the opening puck drop, skating away with a 3-0 win over the Flyers on Saturday night. Rod Brind’Amour’s club showcased its trademark speed and relentless play early, overwhelming the Orange and Black in all three zones.
The Hurricanes struck twice in the opening period to seize momentum. Logan Stankoven opened the scoring before Jackson Blake added another to put Carolina firmly in control after 20 minutes. Stankoven later buried his second goal of the night in the second period as the Hurricanes continued to dictate play offensively.
The Flyers struggled to generate sustained pressure without leading scorer Owen Tippett, who missed the game with an undisclosed injury and is currently listed as day-to-day. Philadelphia managed just 19 shots on goal against Carolina netminder Freddie Andersen, who stopped every attempt for the shutout.
Dan Vladar made 20 saves on 23 shots for the Flyers. The victory marked Carolina’s fifth straight win of the Stanley Cup Playoffs.
The Flyers will now look to regroup quickly in Game 2 on Monday night in Carolina before the series eventually shifts back to Philadelphia.
