Former St . Joe’s star Jameer Nelson is emerging as a legitimate internal option to help lead the Philadelphia 76ers front office moving forward.

According to Tony Jones of The Athletic, league sources indicate Nelson is among the candidates being considered for the team’s president of basketball operations role following the firing of Daryl Morey. Jones reported that Nelson is viewed as Philadelphia’s “strongest internal candidate” after serving this past season as assistant general manager.

Jones also noted that even if Nelson does not ultimately land the top executive role, he is still considered a strong favorite to receive a promotion within the organization.

Meanwhile, Marc Stein reported there has been league-wide “chatter” throughout the season about Nelson receiving an expanded role regardless of who is hired to oversee basketball operations. Stein added that Nelson is highly respected internally and increasingly viewed around the league as someone capable of eventually running his own franchise.

The former Saint Joseph’s standout has steadily climbed the executive ranks since retiring from the NBA and appears positioned to remain a major part of Philadelphia’s future.
